Look, Mom! How a 30-Day Yoga Challenge Got Me on TV!

Today is THE day! It’s the big three-oh of my 30-Day Yoga Challenge! Initially, I started the challenge as a way to stay motivated during these crazy Coronavirus days, where most of us are spending WAY more time within the confines of our own homes than we’re used to. Without any structure to my days, I thought, I’ll never leave my pajamas! Worse, if not careful, I could sink into an unfortunate bog-of-eternal-stench-like funk. (A David Bowie “Labyrinth” reference, for those too young to know.)

I needed you to see the full glory of this onesie! πŸ™‚ (Pic of me with my adorable niece!)

30-Day Yoga Challenge

So, I decided one day after finishing an online-yoga session that I’d commit to doing yoga every single day for 30 days and then post about it on Facebook as a way of forcing myself to follow through with it! And guess what? Publicly announcing something like that really works! I’ve followed through and gotten my yoga on. Every. Dang. Day. It’s felt great!

Cruise-Ship Friends Re-Connect!

So, I started posting my practice on FaceBook daily — at times including little videos I’d made. Then, four days into the challenge, a friend from my cruise-ship days reached out to me.Β She’s a television host/editor/videographer extraordinaire, who has been filming, creating, and hosting TV shows up in Canada for years!

Here we are during our cruise-ship days (circa 2005), leading sail-away party dances on Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2!

Leah messaged me saying she wanted to get her “friends around the world to record themselves in … quarantine and talk about what is going on in their areas … how they are doing and handling things and what they are doing to keep busy.”

Totally Obscure Claims to Fame

“You are the perfect person for my first one,” Leah told me.

Now, I’m thrilled about the vote of confidence, but my last TV appearance was when I was interviewed on local news in my pajamas after escaping an apartment fire back in 2013. And the last time before that was in 1989!

That’s right, folks! 1989. (When I lived in South Korea at the age of fourteen, I did a little bit of modeling and once starred in a Korean bean-popsicle commercial!) Oh how I wish I had that footage.

Three teens in shoulder-padded jackets -- 80s style!
I don’t have the bean-popsicle-commercial footage, but I do have this gem! (These posters were plastered on public buses and in subway stations in Seoul, South Korea, in the winter of ’89!) πŸ™‚

“Let me know if you are game! We can incorporate some of your yoga workouts too!” That’s what Leah said, and, well, I was game!

Self-Quarantining in Seattle

Thankfully, since filming my bit a few weeks ago we’ve managed to do a good job of “flattening the curve” here in Seattle, so we’re no longer quite the “hotspot” we once were.

Another thing before clicking the video: a disclaimer! Of all the yoga footage in all the yoga pants in all the world — and I submitted a fair amount of yoga action! — the one that made the cut is kind of — nay, totally — embarrassing! But then again, so is pretty much everything else I’ve already posted here, so bring on the public embarrassment!

Goodness, I just realized I’m on TV in my pajamas, yet again. But I try to remember not to take things — including myself! — too seriously. Life is finite, so let’s not forget to play a little, shall we?Β

Do you have any wacky claims to fame? Have you picked up any fun hobbies or practices during these crazy days? I hope you’ll tell me all about it in the comments section! Thanks for stopping by, and until next time, namaste, my friends.
